Modern Foreign Languages
We believe that French is a foreign language for all and as our nearest global neighbour, learning French allows our children to continue to have a sense of what it means to be European and a global citizen. We aim to foster the children's curiosity about other countries and cultures and help them to see, appreciate and celebrate similarities and differences between them. We want the children to develop a sense of personal fulfilment through learning another language. Through learning French, we believe that we are creating firm foundations for our children to move on to learning a range of other languages at KS3 and beyond.
At Suffolks, we teach French explicitly from Years 3 -6 using an adapted version of KAPOW's French scheme of learning. Children in KS1 and EYFS are given basic informal experiences of French. French is taught during the Autumn term and is linked closely with our Design and Technology curriculum. At the end of the Autumn term, we hold a French Christmas market where children buy and sell products they have made and have a real purpose for using the French they have learned. We keep our French learning alive throughout the year by recapping and using French during assemblies.
